When The Woke Salaryman announced that they would have a book signing session for their book launch, I immediately made plans to attend the session at Kinokuniya Singapore on May 4th, 2024.
The Woke Salaryman is an online comic about finance and can be found on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and TikTok. Their content is mostly very light, digestible, and relatable, especially for someone like me who has been living in Singapore for quite some time. This comic is run by He Ruiming, who mostly writes the stories, and Wei Choon Goh, who illustrates them.
I happened to have known Goh for quite some time and have been following their comic since the beginning. The book is a selection of already published comics, grouped under one theme: “Crash Course on Capitalism & Money: Lessons From The World’s Most Expensive City.” It sounds like a heavy title, but fear not, it’s light and basic. Most people often forget that the basics are the most important to build a foundation.
When I asked them about their creative process, they admitted that the process is very fluid, with Ruiming coming up with the ideas and brainstorming them with the team before they go to Goh for the illustration process. Their team has now grown to around 4-5 members (if I’m not mistaken), and what was once a side hustle has now become their main project. They are also humble and very open, admitting that they are not some sort of financial gurus; they are just sharing what they know from their experience.
I managed to get them to sign my copy. I’m looking forward to reading this book over the weekend!
